Project Summary
This 8400 m2 recreation centre in Scarborough experienced a five-alarm fire in early 2019 and sections of the Natatorium and Community Centre were substantially damaged. Impressively, the fire, which tore through the foam insulation over the mass timber roof, did not significantly penetrate the mass timber roof deck below, and firefighters were forced to pull sections of the structure down just to get access to the fire that was burning above. Testing and analytics aside, the condition of the Deck and the Glulams after this multi-day fire serves as a remarkable testament to the resilience of mass timber under fire. Timmerman’s scope for this project was to demolish and re-build the original structure under a very tight timeline. Total Glulam in the project was 240 m3, while the total quantity of roof Deck & Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) was 2800 m2.
